Wurdee Buloc Inlet Channel, Barwon Downs
Client: Barwon Water
Location: Barwon Downs, Western Victoria
$2.8M

The Wurdee Boluc Inlet Channel (WBIC) is a critical asset for Geelong’s water supply. Originally constructed in the 1930’s and widened in the 1950’s, the channel was constructed to transport water from the West Barwon Reservoir to Wurdee Boluc Reservoir by gravity only, via open channel and siphons. To maintain constant gradient of the open channel sections of the upper reaches of the WBIC, the original construction comprised cut/fill works across the steep hillsides of the Otway
Mountains.
The poor condition of a remote section, led to the decision to replace the open channel with a 1600 mm GRP pipe, with opportunistic remediation of the channel embankments at locations recommended by GHD and vegetation detritus as
responsible maintenance strategy.

Design and Construction innovations were incorporated across the project scope of:
-
Demolition of the existing concrete channel and structures, including an existing culvert bridge
-
Earthworks, and embankment crest or toe repairs at several locations
-
Replacement of an existing channel underdrain below the pipeline to divert runoff and a private landowners dam overflow safely across the pipeline alignment.
-
Installation of longitudinal trench drainage and finger drains through the embankment for monitoring of pipe integrity during operational lifespan.
-
Supply, installation and commissioning of 1km of 1600mm GRP pipeline
-
Construction of Concrete structures to connect with siphon pipes at each end of the channel section, including level sensors
-
4 access chambers
-
1km of improved access track adjacent to and over the pipeline trench/filled channel for safer access
-
Environmentally sensitive landscaping reinstatement

Pump Station - Bellbrae
Client: Barwon Water
Location: Bellbrae, Victoria
$1.6M
Keystone Civil undertook the comprehensive design and construction of a sewer pump station to transition Bellbrae from its septic system to a modern sewer system. The project features a 3.2 km, 63 mm rising main that discharges into the existing gravity system in Jan Juc. Initially, Keystone manufactured and installed a 16,000-litre sewer pump station at Bellbrae PS, tailored to the area’s specific needs and integrated it with the new sewer infrastructure.
The project also involved extensive pipeline installations, including 2 km of 63 mm diameter sewer pipeline, 1 km of 160 mm diameter sewer pipeline, and 3 km of 160 mm diameter water pipeline. This phase included boring operations from the school area to Barwon Water's connection points in Jan Juc, running parallel to the busy Great Ocean Road. Essential infrastructure components like scour valves and air valves were installed to facilitate maintenance and manage air pressure within the system. Strategies were implemented to ensure pedestrian safety along the high-traffic Great Ocean Road walking track. This project significantly enhanced Bellbrae's sewer and water infrastructure, ensuring a reliable and efficient system that integrates seamlessly with Jan Juc’s existing network.

It included precise PE welding, bends, tee pieces, and DICL fittings for durability, along with an inline bypass, offset hydrant, and infrastructure modifications. Thrust blocks, tie-in connections, and rigorous testing ensured reliability.

Beyond pipelines, the project incorporated reinstating structural asphalt, traffic islands, crack sealing, linemarking, grout filling, and efficient traffic management. Nightworks were strategically employed to minimise daytime traffic disruptions, scheduling construction during off-peak hours for minimal impact.
Ocean Grove Sewer Rising Main
Client: Barwon Water
Location: Ocean Grove, Victoria
$6.9M
Due to failing infrastructure, the Ocean Grove sewer rising main required a 1.6km replacement through Barwon Heads township. Keystone constructed an above-ground bypass to maintain service while replacing the main, dividing the project into three sections to minimise local impact and risks.
Keystone ensured pipe quality through a site inspection in Adelaide, reducing future rework risks. To minimise disruption, a main compound was set up outside the township, and proactive risk analysis and optimised design, including additional fittings and reprogramming works, helped reduce delays and costs.
Green Organics Processing Facility, 450 Stacey’s Road, Anakie
Client: City of Greater Geelong Council
$3.2M

Keystone Civil was awarded the contract by City of Greater Geelong to construct the Garden Organic Composting Facility at Carrs Road, Anakie. The facility is the first organic recycling facility in the region and will process up to 35,000 tonnes of green organics collected from the Greater Geelong’s garden waste bins. The project is a part of the State-wide Waste and Resource Recovery Infrastructure Plan and the Victorian Organics Recovery Strategy, which plans for all viable recovered materials to be extracted from waste streams before reaching landfill and was a joint funded project between City of Greater Geelong and Sustainability Victoria with a vision of relieving pressure from the state’s waste recovery and disposal system as the Victorian population continue to surge at an unprecedented rate.
The completed facility processes green organics including branches, grass clippings and other garden waste and turns the waste into Australian Standard compost which can be reused in Parks, Sports facilities and Farm and agricultural land within the region. The facility also allows water to be harvested from the site and reused, minimising the use of potable water in the composting process. Projects in regional Victoria have increased the organics processing capacity by 38,250 tonnes per year, with approximately 74,570 households now able to access kerbside collections for food and/or organic waste. With the launch of the new facility, kerbside organics collection services have resulted in an average abatement of 81,621 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
